Why do People Still Believe in Flat Earth Theory? WTF is Wrong With People?
Sensible folks out there always ask the question, why even waste time explaining yourself to idiots? Well it’s good fun for starters. Not to mention that we all love a good old argument, even when it’s futile. I’ve yet to come across a flat earther who changed their opinion on the subject. Maybe after this article we can find one!
1. The Moon
Mankind has been gazing up at the moon for as long as we’ve had eyes in our heads. To say we are well acquainted with our nearest neighbour goes without saying or so you would think. We know it’s not a God or its made from cheese. We also know that when there’s an eclipse the curved shadow on the moon, which comes from our homely planet, leaves us without a shadow of doubt that this thing called earth is round not flat. Well to be super precise it’s an oblate spheroid.
2. Ships on the Horizon
If you care to nip down to the beach you can often see ships disappearing into the horizon. That’s because, as we already know, the earth is curved and eventually a ship will sail out of sight due to this curvature.
The Discovery Channel did an experiment to prove this. They had a laser beam set up horizontally on one side of a lake. It was approximately 1 metre above the ground. If the idiots are correct and the earth is flat, the laser should be the same height at the other side of the lake’s shore. Well I’m sorry to say, but the team were in a helicopter and they measured the drop from the laser at 24 feet and that was based on the lake being either 6 kilometres or 6 miles. Honestly I can’t remember exactly which one it was, but the salient point being it proved the lake was curved. I’ve heard plenty of flaties say that water can’t bend. Seriously. Well it can and the earth is flat so get over it.
3. Varying Star Constellations
Aristotle noted this back in 300-and-something BC. He was travelling back from Egypt and noticed that depending on how far away you are from the equator you see differing star constellations. It might seem easy for use to comprehend, but it was no doubt a massive thing to come out with back in his day.
Another stick in the eye for the flat earth posse and a feather in the cap for us lot the scientists.
4. Shadows From Sticks in the Wells
Eratosthenes (276-194 BCE) used this principle to calculate the circumference of the Earth quite accurately. He was so precise that his feat amazes scientists to this day. Similar to how the ships sail in to the distance, but not entirely the same. He measured the distance between to water wells. Actually he paid someone to do this on his behalf and they must have been quite trustworthy otherwise his calculations wouldn’t have been as correct. He then set sticks upright in the wells and measured the suns shadow at midday.
When the sun is directly over one stick the shadow will be at an angle on the other and vice versa. From the angle of the shadows and the distance between the wells he could calculate the curvature and size of the earth.
This was, and still is, an amazing feat of scientific ingenuity when you think about it being over 2000 years ago.
5. Seeing Further from Higher
This is a very simple, but effective experiment. Stand on a flat plane or field. Notice how far you can see. Then all you need to do is walk to higher ground and you will be able to see much further. Again this is due to the curvature of the earth. Alternatively you can go up in a hot air balloon and you’ll notice the higher you go up the further into the distance you can see.
6. If You’re Still a Paranoid Sceptic…
Flat earth believers are a stubborn bunch. Only they know the true reason for this. Maybe they just really are dumb mo fos? But let’s not be nasty for a moment and try and help them over to our side of thinking. We all know people can manipulate things, like graphics and pictures, but that doesn’t mean everything we see in life is a fake or forgery.
You know, sometimes the things we see are actually real. Shock horror! Things like Time Zones, gravity and images from space. There’s plenty of concepts that are real life events. Each one proves the earth is round.
So, therefore, just go on YouTube and you will be able to see the home-made videos from regular people. Not horrible lying NASA. Just ordinary folks like you and I that go into the desert and send rockets into low earth orbit with GoPro cameras strapped to them. You can see on the footage they post that the earth is curved. It’s not a hoax.
