Gun Crime in America – The Death Toll Rises
For all the Gun Lobby‘s bluff and bluster, they can’t hide that fact that gun crime in America is out of control. Talk comes cheap, as they say. It’s easy to sprout nonsense sayings like ‘the only thing that kills a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun’. What isn’t so easy is to expect people to believe such things.
If good guys really do kill bad guys then why are mass shootings so prevalent? Clearly there aren’t enough good guys on standby when these home-grown hate mongers strike.
We know the Internet is the home of Fake News, but it’s also the home of genuine facts. When there are websites that document the extent of America’s mass shooting problem, you can’t hide the statistics so easy when they’re on view to everyone with a computer. That’s most of the developed world when you take smartphones into account.
How about the National Rifle Assosciation‘s new worst enemy – Gun Violence Archive. I bet the Donald and chums are over the moon that they’re offering such useful information to anti-gun protesters. They’d be even more chuffed if they new that the website is not so much an enemy, but an independent non-profit organisation.
It’s an honourable thing that they’re doing if they truly are standing on the fence – and what a fence. If it gets any bigger DT won’t even need a wall.
The Gun Helped Build America
Yes, I get it. The gun helped build America into the force it is today. The right for every man and woman to own a gun has been enshrined in the American constitution since 1791. But so what? That was over 200 years ago. Times have changed immensely since then. When the great leaders of the past asked for that inclusion, it was to ensure that the Government couldn’t turn into a dictatorship because the people could fight back.
In all reality there is little chance of such a thing happening in this day and age. America isn’t Russia. Yes, it might have a few selfish billionaires pulling the strings of power behind the scenes. What advanced country doesn’t? That doesn’t mean it’s about to get hijacked by a Putin like bad guy. For all it’s imperfections, the US is as stable as a citizen could expect. Literally light years away from Venezuela style disaster.
Taking all this into consideration, why the need for firearms? We all know that the average American citizen doesn’t need a firearm, let alone an assault rifle. The sheer amount of AK47-style weapons on a Mid-West housing estate would make ISIS jealous.
The US is the World’s biggest market for civilian firearms like the AK47. The Izhmash factory in Russia sells almost as many weapons to America than it does to the Russian Army and Police.
In 2012 the US civilian weapons market was $4.3 billion. Yikes. Naturally it has grown since then – they sell faster than they can be imported.
Now the Gun is Helping to Tear it Apart
You have to question the wisdom of America’s past and present rulers. They’ve been quick to go to war in the name of protecting their country. Every single one of them would say this is to be expected. Americans are patriots of the highest calibre, and I don’t doubt that for one moment, except…
In the last 50 years more Americans have died from gun violence than have been killed in all the wars combined.
Let that sentence sink in for a moment. I know it’s hard to imagine, but it’s true. There have been more Americans killed at the hands of their fellow citizen than have been killed by enemies at war. How sad is that?
So the point I’d like to make is this: if American’s are so quick to go to war with another country, even when that countries guilt is thin at best. Why are they so stubborn when it comes to sorting out problems closer to home. You’d think it would be easier to strip your neighbour of guns than a foreigner. Neighbours should be more understanding after all.
There’s no doubt that there is simply no trust on home soil. People want guns for protection of real and perceived threats.
Politicians are too Scared to Stand up to Gun Rights
It’s common knowledge that politicians are liars. We know that a high proportion of educated people don’t believe in God or are the slightest bit religious. Yet we never see an atheist politician. There must be hundreds, but they’re too scared to admit the truth for fear of losing votes. So what do they do – what comes natural to them – they tell lies.
When it comes to challenging gun rights in America, a religious country that takes gun ownership even more seriously. What do you expect your beloved politician to do? Tell the truth? Don’t be ridiculous.
If getting elected is a politican’s lifelong goal, they’re not going to spoil that party for anyone.
252 Mass Shootings in America in 2019
You’d think that 252 mass shootings would be an aweful number for a full year, but it’s only just gone August. Come Christmas time that figure might be nearer 400.
Is there any wonder that with shocking statistics like that the comparison against 50 years’ of war is even more believable. 400 x 50 is 20,000 souls lost in a place where they should have felt safe.
How warped do politicians have to be not to do anything?
Look at all the Fuss over Russian Election Tampering
It’s only recently that Americans were up in arms over Russian election tampering. However, there are forces closer to home doing far more fiddling in full view of everyone.
Is it right that the American Correctional Assosciation can donate $1 million towards an election campaign that was tough on justice. Understandably people want jobs, but when it comes to the expense of people spending twice as long in prison, often for soft crimes, it is absolutely shocking. Not to mention it’s nothing more than legalised corruption.
These are the same tactics used by the War and Gun Lobby, and another horrible entity – Big Pharma.
They give money to greedy politicians and effectively buy the law.
While it doesn’t make Russian tampering okay, it does draw parallels to it. The only real difference, corruption aside, is that when the Gun Lobby buy their own rules. People die. Men, woman and children. Families are ripped apart. Lives ruined by injuries. The list goes on and it’s all so avoidable.
I’ll leave with this sad fact. 281 people killed and over a 1000 injured in 8 months. When will America wake up and solve this problem once and for all?
281 Killed and Nothing will Change
The even sadder fact is that nothing will change. No amount of dead bodies will make gun owners give up their right to bear arms. How messed up is that when your friends, relatives and neighbours that you’ve known all your life are the biggest threat to your safety.
Fair enough, they’re not serial killers or mass murderers.
No they’re worse.
They’re worse because unlike stone-cold killers. They’re supposed to have a conscience. Supposed to, but they don’t. If they really did they’d put the guns down, en mass, which would also disarm the 0.1%-lunatics that spoil it for everyone.
It isn’t easy giving up something you love. Guns are life-long hobbies for millions of people. Taking away a man’s guns is like taking wine from an alcoholic. They would be totally devastated and understandably so.
That doesn’t mean we should give up trying, because nobody deserves to die early. Especially not at the hands of a fellow American protected by a 200-year-old law.
